Menittiness and Sharpening Your Hand Saw

If your saw isn't cutting as well as it used to, the blade probably needs sharpening. Keeping your saw blade sharp is crucial for achieving optimal results with your tool. To maintain your saw blades effectively, follow these steps: Clean the blade with a wire brush. Secure it in a vise. Inspect the teeth for damage or dullness. Optionally, use a flat file to join the teeth and level them. Optionally, set the teeth with a saw set tool to ensure a proper kerf. 

Sharpen with a triangular file: Crosscut saws should be filed at a 15-20° angle, alternating teeth, with 2-3 strokes per tooth. Rip saws should be filed straight or at a 5-10° angle, across all teeth. Check for uniform sharpness, perform a wood test, and adjust as needed. Oil and store your saw properly. Note: Hardened teeth, such as those on Silky saws, may not be sharpenable; in that case, replace the blade.
